EAST RUTHERFORD — Giants backup quarterback Ryan Nassib had a marquee audition on Friday night. He can only hope the encore goes better.
Nassib flopped in a rare opportunity to start in place of ironman Eli Manning, who was held out of Friday's preseason opener against the Dolphins. Nassib completed 7-of-15 passes for 75 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions. He also fumbled three times, although he only lost one.
"I think ball security is the No. 1 thing," Nassib said. "I didn't do a good job protecting the ball tonight at all. There's definitely going to be some stuff we need to work on and me personally, especially. Those turnovers are unacceptable."
Nassib, a fourth-round pick in the 2013 draft, has only made five mop-up appearances in his first three seasons as Manning's backup. With Nassib's rookie contract set to expire after this season, every opportunity is crucial as he tries to show the other 31 NFL teams that he's capable of being a starter.
Nassib's performance in the Giants' 27-10 loss to the Dolphins at MetLife Stadium on Friday night won't have general managers clamoring for his services. But it's also only one preseason game, played without star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., who was given the night off after severe weather delayed the kickoff by almost an hour.
Nassib will have more opportunities in the final three preseason games to erase the bitter taste left by Friday's performance.
"I'm just hungry to get to the next practice, get out there and get another opportunity to improve," Nassib said. "Take away what happened tonight, learn from it and work on it to get better moving forward."
Nassib led the Giants on a nine-play, 74-yard touchdown drive on the game's opening possession, but his play deteriorated behind the second-team offensive line. He was sacked four times and pressured on many more drop-backs.
"He was playing a little better with the first offensive line in there, then we started getting a little bit of pressure," coach Ben McAdoo said. "Some throws were coming up short."
Both of Nassib's interceptions came on underthrown deep balls. While he has been inconsistent during training camp, he has connected on a number of long completions.
It's just another thing for Nassib to work on before his next turn on stage.
"Any opportunity to go out there and play is a great opportunity," Nassib said. "Every time I get to go out there and play, it's a learning experience, good and bad. You just take what you can from the bad experiences and try not to make those mistakes again in the future."
